The Bilateral journey

So, here I am a little less than 24 hours after surgery on the left ear- my Cochlear implant that makes be bilateral. In 4 weeks when I get activated I will be hearing in “Digital Surround Sound”!! LOL

we will get back to builds soon- promise!

Anyway, why go bilateral (Cochlear Implant both ears)? That’s an easy hard question. Having worn a hearing aid in both ears for 17+ years, I was accustomed to my hearing loss. In fact most people didn’t even realize it~ I have what my audiologist friend says is amazing auditory closure. In other words even if I only catch bits an pieces of words, my mind will race RO make sense of it, and combine that with lip/face reading and I could fake it pretty good. But eventually it caught up with me and ended up with a Cochlear Implant (CI) on the right side in July of 2020. Fast forward six months and at the mapping session my audiologist (who is AWESOME) wanted to test my left ear since it had been over a year. Sure enough the hearing had deteriorated enough to qualify fo a CI, and I can’t say I was mad, because after having the clarity of the CI on the right, my left was struggling to make sense of the garbled sounds. Hearing aids only amplified the sounds, so when my HA was pushing enough sound for me to hear (132db) it became distorted. So did all the fun stuff, luckily insurance approved quickly, and here I am day one post op. Doing really well, only slight discomfort due to pressure bandage, but otherwise great! Totally deaf right now, which is an interesting experience, I am communicating via txt or dry erase board because my dumb butt didn’t think about that and take ASL before hand!😂😂 But that is getting fixed starting this weekend. I have joined a wonderful group call HLAA -Hearing Loss Association of America, Indianapolis chapter, and one of the great ladies is giving a Facebook Live class on begging signing on Sunday!

thanks for reading so far!
